What Are Freestanding Jib Cranes?

A freestanding jib crane is a jib system that does not have many placement constraints. Businesses can install this machinery indoors or outdoors, in an open area, or under other crane systems. These cranes come in a variety of mounts based on what services you want them to provide:

  • Spanco base-plate mounted 100-series jib cranes: Installers place a jib crane with a base-plate mount by bolting it into a foundation of reinforced concrete and using gussets to hold it steady.
  • Spanco foundation mounted 101-series jib cranes: This type of freestanding jib crane is the most permanent. It does not need gussets, offering full utilization of the work area around the mast. Instead of gussets, the installers pour two separate reinforced concrete foundations to stabilize it. A foundation-mounted jib crane also has a metal plate at the base of its mast, which goes on top of the first pour reinforced concrete foundation.
  • Spanco sleeve-insert mounted 102-series jib cranes: Businesses choose sleeve-insert-mounted jib cranes for a more flexible option than foundation mounted. Just like the foundation mounted, a sleeve-insert mounted jib crane doesn’t use gussets either, so the full work area around the mast can be utilized. The installers first place a sleeve insert on a first pour reinforced concrete foundation. The sleeve insert is then reinforced with a second pour reinforced concrete foundation. The mast is then placed in the sleeve insert and properly aligned using wedges, which get welded to the sleeve to ensure proper alignment. A sleeve-insert mounted jib crane allows for crane relocation without damaging the mast.

Benefits over Wall-Mounted Jib Cranes

Freestanding jib cranes have several benefits over wall-mounted jib cranes. Some of these benefits include:

  • Greater rotation: Floor-mounted jib crane systems can rotate 360 degrees, giving them more range than wall-mounted jib cranes, which can only have 180 degrees of rotation.
  • Higher capacities: Spanco 100, 101, and 102-Series Freestanding Jib Cranes are available in capacities up to 15 tons.
  • Longer spans: Depending on the capacity, Spanco 100, 101, and 102-Series Freestanding Jib Cranes are available in longer spans than our wall-mounted jib cranes.
